Just out blog hopping tonight and came across your blog. You did the right thing, you saved your knee and that is more important then anything. Even though I am no where near your abilities, I did a 5K and shouldn't off and have had to be off for 5 weeks because I didn't listen to my body, my mind thought I could just keep going. Not good.

I was there and had to pull the plug after my 5th loop. I felt pretty good after the 100k point but ended up with sharp knee pain that crept up in the 5th loop for me. I called it a night after 77 miles. The decision was not to push it to the point that I couldn't walk for the next week or possibly longer. Of course I was fine just 3 days later as well. I'm happy with the 100k buckle but I too want that 100 mile buckle. I'll be heading back to get one...most likely next year.
